Ghasem Abad is a beautiful village near Rudsar city, in the east of Gilan province, Iran. The Colorful clothes of women, happy local music, happy dance and the beauties of nature are the most Ghasem Abad tourist attractions. Chador-Shab (Lavan) is a silk or cotton fabric traditionally woven by the hands of Ghasem Abad women. Older women and young girls use the traditional weaving machines to revive the heritage of their grandmothers. Considering the wide employment of women in Chador-Shab weaving craft, the high quality of the products and establishing several local centers dedicated to this handmade art, Ghasem Abad village was nationally inscribed as the village of Chador-Shab weaving in 2019. The Ghasem Abad village was inscribed on the list of UNESCO world cities and villages in January 2020 as the World Village of Chador-Shab Weaving. Currently more than 600 women in this village are occupied with this 2000-year-old art. Many centers are active in education, introduction and promotion of Chador-Shab weaving art. These centers include the Forum of Innovative Textile, Chador-Shab Weaving workshops, local shops and the Museum of Chador-Shab Weaving.

Walking in the alleyways of the Ghasem Abad village, you will pass the doors of many Chador-shab workshops. In one of these local looms, you will be introduced to the artisan of chador-shab weaving whose workshop is finely designed with enthralling floor mats, tablecloths, curtains, table runners and all woven with chador-shab technique. After getting to know about chador-shab weaving history, designs and motifs, and especial weaving loom called pachal, the master demonstrates weaving technique on the pachal machine. She also explains about motifs and their interpretations. These local workshops are one of the Ghasem-Abad tourist attractions.

Three or four women are hand in hand to put the long threads together based on the desired pattern and the final width of the fabric. Then it is time to roll up the settled threads and put them in the handmade loom, locally known as pachal. The weaver now puts the chosen spool into the wooden weaving shuttle as the weft. Flying the weft between the wraps, gradually artist makes a unique, delicate fabric. After each flight of the shuttle, the artist beats the threads with a tool named comb to put the wefts between the wraps and make an acceptably knitted textile.

Ghasem Abad Harvest Celebration
Rice farmers in northern Iran will show gratitude to the generosity of nature at harvest season during a festival on September. Agriculture is one of the sacred jobs that people in different regions have been busy with since past times. The celebration of Kharman (harvest) is a traditional, olden and lasting ceremony in northern Iran which is held at the end of the agricultural season after a period of planting and harvesting the products of wheat and rice paddy to eliminate farm workers fatigue in spring and summer in Mazandaran, Gilan and Golestan provinces since Qajar era. This celebration is a symbol of the gratitude, friendship and cooperation of the people and a way to preserve and revive ancient traditions and native culture.
Most residents of the Gilan province are rice farmers who harvest their paddy fields in September. Traditional ceremony of Kharman (Harvesting) is done through symbolic performance of harvesting with traditional agricultural tools and implements. The festival includes local music performance as well as some local recreation programs like Lafandbazi, a kind of tightrope walking, and Qishbazi, a kind of competition with belt. Gilemardi wrestling and Gilemard thanksgiving rituals are also amongst the events of the festival which are performed. The festival was registered on Iran’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 1992.
